Barramundi is Australian English for Asian Sea Bass; a loanword from the language of Australian Aboriginal people, traditionally from the Rockhampton area of Queensland in north-eastern Australia. The Top End Barramundi specifically refers to the often oversized game fish of the same species in the harbour, rives and seas surrounding the city of Darwin at the Top End of the country.
The fish, most famous for its shimmering iridescent scales, is prized by anglers and enjoyed in the diverse Indigenous, Asian and Western cuisines which make Darwin a melting-pot of cultures. Joe Bananas ‘Top End Barramundi’ Raw Silk Jacket takes its inspiration from the spectacular array of colours visible on the scales of this fish such as aqua, emerald green, burned umber and amber.
